Huge estate up for sale in western Michigan

In the early 20th century, Holland Furnace Co. was the largest employer in Holland, Michigan and one of the most important businesses in the state. Its founders amassed significant wealth, including a massive estate known as Hazelbank.

That residence is now on the market. Its owners are asking for $18.9 million for approximately 13,000 square feet on about 38 acres of property. During the company’s heyday, the property, which sits on Lake Macatawa’s Pine Creek Bay, was accessible only by rail.

The property boasts a number of amenities, including horse stables, a three-story great room, an exercise room, a lap pool, a home theater and a “mother-in-law” apartment. There are also two master suites – one for winter and one for summer.

The home also takes advantage of its waterfront location. The building was designed so that Lake Macatawa could be seen from every room. All told, the property has 885 feet of shoreline.

The owner, who is an heir to the Holland Furnace Co. fortune, says she is getting rid of the property because it is time to move on. She has lived alone since her husband died and says the home is much too big for one person. She would prefer to split her time between her properties in Arizona and on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The property is currently the most expensive piece of residential real estate for sale in all of western Michigan. It is also one of the most unique, and not just because of its features. Lake front property doesn’t go on the market often, but Hazelbank has not been up for sale in nearly 100 years.
